Nike hails Fraser-Pryce as ‘most accomplished female sprinter in history’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Vice president of global sports brand Nike, Brett Holts paid tribute to Jamaica’s sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce on Monday, describing her as “the most accomplished female sprinter in the history of the sport”.
Holts was speaking at a special award ceremony honouring the five-time 100m World Champion, affectionately known as Jamaica’s “Pocket Rocket”.
“One of the oldest philosophies in track & field is that speed is inherently built upon the foundation of strength,” Holts shared. “If you have had the fortunate opportunity to spend any amount of time with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, then you’ll understand that that remarkable speed is based on her strong foundation of strength.”
Nike’s partnership with Fraser-Pryce dates back to 2008—the same year she stunned the world by winning the 100m at the Beijing Olympics, becoming the first Caribbean woman to claim gold in the prestigious event.
Since then, the sprint icon has cemented her legacy, amassing seven additional Olympic medals and an astonishing 16 World Championship medals. She remains the only sprinter in history to win five world titles over 100 metres.
The recognition from Nike was warmly received by Fraser-Pryce, who in turn applauded the brand for its role in shaping her career.
“Thank you for the ways you have celebrated me,” she expressed. “Thank you for the way you have celebrated our athletes and how you will continue to celebrate them.”
The 38-year-old reflected on her journey and hinted that this year marks not only a celebration but also the closing chapter of her competitive career.
“As I look forward to this year, it is a celebration but it’s also a winning moment. It’s the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and putting God first.
Fraser-Pryce confirmed that this week’s National Championships will be her last, signalling the beginning of the end for one of the most decorated and inspiring careers in track and field history.
