Henry eyes classic glory at Caymanas Park
Veteran jockey Wesley Henry has his sights firmly set on adding to his tally of classic victories this season, following his return to competitive racing in Jamaica earlier this year.
Henry, who resumed riding at Caymanas Park in April, has ridden in 10 races since his return from the United States and is determined to make his presence felt despite limited opportunities.
“Things haven’t gone the way that I would like since I came back here because I have not been getting the rides that I would like,” Henry said. “But I am just going to continue to work hard and hopefully many more winning rides will come my way.”
The former champion jockey is no stranger to big-race success, having already secured two classic wins in his career. However, he is eager to expand that number before the 2025 racing season concludes.
“I think that I have only won two classic races in my career, so I really want to have that this year,” he said. “I came here trying to win a classic this year and so I am working on that.” While based primarily in Florida, where he rides at Gulfstream Park, Henry has temporarily shifted focus to local racing in a bid to chase his classic ambitions. “I will be back and forth out of the island because I am based in Florida and I am mostly riding at Gulfstream Park,” he explained. “But I am kind of giving it a little break for now. I still have my business there and horses that I work with, but for now, Jamaica is my focus.”
Henry’s career achievements speak volumes. With 777 winners on home soil; he sits 11th on the all-time list of jockeys based on winners at Caymanas Park. Internationally, he has ridden 209 winners, 246 seconds, and 273 thirds from 2,744 mounts — a testament to his consistency and class.
