Lyles edges Bednarek in 200m at US championships

EUGENE, United States (AFP) — World champion Noah Lyles stormed to victory in the 200m at the US Track and Field Championships in Oregon on Sunday, coming from behind to pip Kenny Bednarek in a testy final at Hayward Field.

Lyles, who is already assured of a place at Tokyo’s World Championship as the reigning 100m and 200m champion, reeled in Bednarek just before the finish to win in a world-leading 19.63secs.

Lyles nonchalantly turned his head to stare down Bednarek just before taking the tape, and the two sprinters appeared to have a testy exchange after crossing the line.

Bednarek, who clocked 19.67secs, shoved Lyles in the back as the two eased up after the race.

Robert Gregory took third in 19.8secs.
