Jamaicans Forde, Powell win in Europe
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jevaughn Powell will continue his quest for the qualifying time for the men’s 400m at the World Athletics Championship set for next month in Tokyo, Japan, despite breaking the meet record at Friday’s fifth Memorial Zbigniewa Ludwichowskiego at Olsztyn in Poland, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze event.
Powell, who was third in the quarter mile at the JAAA National championships at the National Stadium in late June, clocked 45.43 seconds to lower the 47.96 seconds set in 2021 by Poland’s Kacper Lewalski.
Fellow Jamaican Delano Kennedy, who was second at the national championships and is also still seeking the qualifying mark of 44.85 seconds, was third in 45.82 seconds with Poland’s Karol Zalewski second in a season’s best 45.66 seconds.
Travis Williams was third in the men’s 100m, running 10.54 seconds (-0.7m/s) behind Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon, who set a meet record 10.36 seconds, dipping under the previous record 10.40 seconds set by Poland’s Dominik Kopec in 2023, while South Africa’s Rivaldo Roberts was second in 10.43 seconds.
Candace McLeod was sixth in the women’s 400m, running 52.98 seconds.
Ryiem Forde, who was fourth at the JAAA national championships, equalled his season’s best 9.98 seconds (1.3m/s) to win in the men’s 100m at the Tipos P-T-S Meeting 2025 and Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event, also on Friday.
Both Forde and American Ronnie Baker, who won with a season’s best 9.94 seconds, beat the previous meet record 10.01 seconds set by Qatar’s Femi Ogunode in 2016.
South Africa’s Shaun Maswanganyi was third in a season’s best 10.07 seconds.
Former national champion Sean Bailey failed to complete the men’s 400m.
