Dear Editor,

The opportunity to partake in the decision-making of who represents our nation as a Government was not inherited. This was won through the blood, sweat, tears, and even loss of lives of our ancestors, who, propelled by their principles, demanded and wrested from the colonial masters the right to self-govern. It is, therefore, a sacred and invaluable right to cherish and protect.

Today, voter apathy is uncomfortably high, and many shy away from participation for several reasons. Simultaneously, many who participate do not appreciate and put value on the vote. This works out to some politicians’ delight, as after many years of neglect they can sway those people’s minds with a few dollars or a short-lived meal. Making sure it is never enough to take them out of a state of mendicancy into self-sufficiency and to enjoy a level of independence.

It behoves those of us who are fortunately better equipped to make decisions based on the original principles that got us the franchise; principles that address inequality, injustice, and corruption. This, then, is a time when all well-thinking Jamaicans should take a stand and become involved in determining how we go forward, ensuring that none with desires and aspirations are left behind.

Remember, none of us, except the very closely connected, are shielded or immune from the conditions that result from unbalanced policies.
