I write to express deep concern over a troubling and unlawful practice recently observed: The use of sirens or flashing lights on vehicles of members or affiliates of political parties. This practice appears to directly contravene our traffic laws, posing risks to public safety and undermining the integrity of official enforcement.

Under Section 52(7) of the Road Traffic Act, 2018, the “Unlawful Use of Siren or Other Similar Device” — which would include flashing or coloured lights not authorised for regular vehicles — is clearly prohibited. Violation of this section is an offence, punishable by a fine of $10,000 on summary conviction.

Moreover, Regulation 103(7) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2022, specifically prohibits the use of revolving lamps by unauthorised individuals or vehicles. Breach of this regulation is similarly punishable with a fine of $10,000.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force has repeatedly warned that fitting green, orange, or any coloured flashing lights onto campaign vehicles constitutes a breach of the Road Traffic Act, as these signals may mislead other motorists into thinking they are law-enforcement or emergency service vehicles. Allowing political campaign vehicles to bear such signals create confusion on our roads, potentially endanger lives, and undermine the clear distinction between political activities and law enforcement.

It was particularly disappointing, therefore, to see that the vehicle belonging to one minister was fitted with these illegal lights. If a minister is openly associated with such a breach, it sends the wrong message to the public about accountability and respect for the law.

I urge the party members to immediately cease the use of siren lights on campaign vehicles. I also call on the police and the relevant regulatory authorities to enforce Section 52(7) of the Road Traffic Act and Regulation 103(7) of the Road Traffic Regulations without exception. Upholding our road laws fairly — regardless of the political affiliation or office of the offender — is essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring road safety.
