Holness to meet with Governor-General ahead of swearing-in of new gov’t
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness is to meet with Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen on Wednesday as state protocols are being activated for the swearing-in of a new government.
The meeting comes after the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) formally advised the Governor-General on Tuesday that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won the general election.
The EOJ’s update was based on the official count, which concluded on Sunday, showing the JLP winning 35 seats to the People’s National Party’s (PNP) 28.
Jamaica Labour Party representative on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica and senior King’s Counsel Tom Tavares Finson provided an update to the media Tuesday afternoon.
Tavares Finson shared “I can confirm that the Electoral Office of Jamaica has corresponded with His Excellency the Governor-General to the effect that the Jamaica Labor Party secured the majority of constituencies in the September 3rd elections”.
“This will pave the way for the swearing-in of the prime minister and the new government. Further correspondence, of course, will follow and detail the result of those elections, but this clears the way and clears the way for a formal meeting between his excellency and the prime minister tomorrow morning arising from which the details of the swearing-in of the prime minister and the government will emerge,” he added.
