NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) – The Bahamas tourism officials have welcomed the launch of the first-ever non-stop service from the United States to the South Bimini Airport (BIM) saying it will provide travelers with “seamless and non-stop access” to the island known as The Gateway to The Bahamas.

Bimini is the westernmost district of the Bahamas and comprises a chain of islands located about 50 miles east of Miami.

The Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation (BMOTIA) said that the non-stop service by American Airlines beginning on February 14, next year, “is a significant milestone, strengthening The Bahamas’ position as a leading tourism destination and reinforcing BMOTIA’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to the Out Islands.

“This is a game-changer for Bimini,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Aviation, Chester Cooper.

“This non-stop connection with a major US city not only enhances accessibility but also signals a new phase of growth for the island’s economy. It is a testament to our ongoing efforts to elevate our tourism product and to partner with world-class airlines to meet global demand for our diverse islands,” he added.

American Airlines will operate non-stop flights three times a week and the officials  say the new route makes it easier than ever for globetrotters to discover Bimini’s pristine beauty and myriad of activities, including world-class beachfront resorts, deep-sea fishing, and thrilling excursions.

“This pivotal development coincides with the government of The Bahamas’ strategic investment in the island’s infrastructure,”  said the BMOTIA, noting that a recent public-private partnership agreement for the South Bimini International Airport includes an US$80 million, two-phase upgrade to modernise the facility to support increased domestic and international commercial flights, enhance customer service and drive economic growth in Bimini.

It said the project, part of the broader Family Islands Renaissance Project, will deliver a state-of-the-art terminal and other improvements designed to support increased commercial flights and enhance the visitor experience. It will also include airfield improvements, terminal upgrades, and the construction of a new passenger terminal.

In 2023, The Bahamas government launched its Out Islands Renaissance Project that targeted the development of a portfolio of 14 airports throughout the archipelago.

“The launch of American Airlines’ non-stop service to Bimini underscores the island’s growing appeal as a premier destination,” said BOTIA’s director general, Latia Duncombe.
