Grange calls on PNP to indicate what action it will take against Norman Scott
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Member of Parliament for St Catherine Central, Olivia Grange, is calling on the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) to indicate publicly what action it intends to take against the mayor of Spanish Town and People’s National Party (PNP) caretaker for St Elizabeth South Eastern, Norman Scott, after he was charged following an alleged altercation with a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) election day worker during the September 3 general election.
“Violence in any shape or form is to be condemned. It is good that moves have been made to hold Scott accountable. The representative of the Jamaica Labour Party who Scott reportedly attacked has the full support of our party. I have spoken to her, and she is concerned for her safety following word of a threat on her life. We are monitoring the issue closely and are confident that the law will be allowed to take its course. It is an important development in Jamaica when the signal is again sent that individuals in authority will not escape sanctions for acts of violence against our nation’s women,” Grange said in a statement.
Grange added that the PNP leadership should immediately indicate publicly what action it intends to take against Scott.
Scott has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property in connection with an incident at a polling station in St Elizabeth during the September 3 general election.
Reports from the Black River police are that about 12:00 noon, the 66-year-old Scott, of Williams Street in Spanish Town and the Gazeland district in St Elizabeth, visited the polling station and exceeded his allotted time.
It is further reported that an agent’s attempt to inform him that his allotted time at the facility had expired resulted in a commotion. Another agent intervened to quell the uproar and was allegedly struck to the face by Scott before the mayor’s security detail removed him from the location.
Summons for the offences were formally served on the mayor on Friday, and he is scheduled to appear in the Santa Cruz Parish Court on Monday, October 13.
