59 seniors graduate from National Digital Literacy programme

KINGSTON, Jamaica – A total of 59 senior citizens graduated on Friday from the Digital Literacy Programme, an initiative of the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) delivered in partnership with the HEART/NSTA Trust.

The programme is aimed at equipping older Jamaicans with the skills needed to navigate today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world.

The graduation ceremony, which also serves as a highlight of Senior Citizens Month 2025, was held under the theme, “Respect, Protect, Empower, Connect.”

Speaking at the event, Minister of Labour and  Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr, who hailed the graduates as trailblazers, said “it  proves that age is no barrier to learning or growth.”

“Many of you have already put your new skills to use – reconnecting with family abroad, accessing vital health and banking services online, and contributing to community projects that depend on digital tools. Your resilience, adaptability, and courage to embrace change inspire us all,” he said.

The programme, which trains seniors to confidently use smartphones, tablets, and computers, is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure no Jamaican senior is left behind. It has allowed participants to gain critical skills for everyday tasks such as online banking, telehealth services, and staying connected with loved ones through social media and digital platforms.

The success of this initiative was credited to strong collaboration between the NCSC and the HEART/NSTA Trust, with special commendation given to Dr Taneisha Ingleton and her team for their role in expanding digital inclusion opportunities for seniors.

In his keynote address, Minister Charles Jr reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive society through expanding training programmes, improving internet connectivity, and providing support for initiatives that promote digital equity among older populations.

“To the graduates, may your new skills unlock information, joy, and purpose,” the speaker added. To those seniors who haven’t yet started this journey – it’s never too late. And to families, we urge you to support your loved ones in embracing technology.”
