KINGSTON, Jamaica – Kingston has been named one of 13 cities worldwide selected to join the Carter Center’s Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, an international initiative aimed at improving women’s access to government information and city services.

Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, welcomed the announcement, describing it as a step forward in the city’s efforts to advance gender equity.

“The Carter Center choosing the city of Kingston is truly an honour as it falls in line with our goals of empowering women,” said Swaby. “Beyond the campaign, we have the chance to build momentum by exploring additional gender-equity frameworks such as CEDAW adoption, further positioning Kingston as a city that champions women and transparency.”

The campaign provides participating cities with support to ensure women are informed about and can access services critical to their wellbeing. Activities will include media outreach, community programmes, government training, public art installations, and opportunities for knowledge-sharing across participating cities.

Now in its fourth cohort, the campaign spans five continents and 48 cities, collectively representing more than 255 million people. Kingston joins Abuja (Nigeria), Cardiff (Wales), Guadalajara (Mexico), Karachi (Pakistan), Kisumu County (Kenya), Liverpool (England), Medellín (Colombia), Recife (Brazil), Rosario (Argentina), Tangier (Morocco), Toronto (Canada), and Tulsa (USA).

The launch coincides with Sunday’s observance of the International Day of Universal Access to Information, underscoring the campaign’s focus on transparency and the right to information.
