US Embassy warns against travelling while pregnant for birthright citizenship

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The United States (US) Embassy in Kingston is advising women against travelling for the primary purpose of giving birth in the US to obtain citizenship for their child.

The embassy labelled the practice as birth tourism and said it was not permitted on a US visa.

The advice came in an Instagram post on Wednesday which was captioned, “Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have US citizenship is not permitted.”

The post further warned that consular officers will deny visa applications if they suspect such intent.
