Caribbean Cement Company Limited says it has made voluntary contributions to both major political parties in Jamaica, adding that it has not paid “fees” to either party.

It sought to make the clarification following reports that its Mexican-based parent, Cemex, disclosed a US$201,538 payment to the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to an article by the Jamaica Gleaner, the funds were described as “fees” paid to the JLP, but mention of it was removed in an amended filing to the SEC.

In a news release on Thursday, Carib Cement said, “These contributions were made in accordance with applicable local laws, regulations, and best practices.

“With respect to the recent amendment referenced in the media, it is our understanding that the amendment, as explained in the amended report, was made solely to correct information included in the original report,” the company explained.

The Opposition People’s National Party had called on the JLP to clarify the matter, with party general secretary Dr Dayton Campbell stating that the reported disclosure of “fees” being paid to the JLP raised serious concerns, especially given the magnitude of the funds.
