In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa’s devastating impact on western Jamaica, the JPS Foundation has stepped forward to bring relief, comfort, and hope to affected families across St Elizabeth and Westmoreland.

On Thursday, November 6, the Foundation’s team journeyed to the fishing villages of Scotts Cove, St Elizabeth and Bluefields, Westmoreland, two communities severely impacted by the storm’s passage. Partnering with Food For The Poor Jamaica, the JPS Foundation distributed care packages, ice, and water, and provided charging stations to help residents power their devices and reconnect with loved ones.

The care packages contained essential food and personal care items to support families as they begin to rebuild their lives. Volunteers also took time to listen, reassure, and encourage residents; many of whom have lost their homes and livelihoods to the storm.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, as a Category 5 system, leaving a trail of destruction across Cornwall County and parts of Middlesex. Thousands were displaced, with widespread damage to homes, schools, and businesses, as well as severe disruption to electricity and communication services.

Sophia Lewis, Head of the JPS Foundation, said the initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting Jamaicans in times of need.

“When the lights go out, our responsibility goes beyond restoring power. We also have a duty to help restore hope,” Lewis shared. “Our team saw firsthand the resilience of these communities. Even in the midst of loss, there was a powerful spirit of togetherness. The JPS Foundation is committed to being there for our people, bringing compassion and care.”

The Foundation’s activation formed part of a wider national relief effort, with Food For The Poor coordinating on-the-ground logistics and community engagement. Through this partnership, the JPS Foundation ensured that aid reached some of the hardest-hit and often overlooked areas.

Lewis added, “This is just the beginning. Recovery will take time, but we are in this for the long haul, supporting Jamaica one community at a time.Outreach will also look at sustainable initiatives to ensure the residents are able to be self-reliant as we explore opportunities for them to restore their livelihoods.”
