KINGSTON, Jamaica — Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has reported an increase in suspected and confirmed cases of leptospirosis, but said the rate of new cases appears to be slowing.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Dr Tufton reported that as of November 22, there were 91 suspected or probable cases, 10 confirmed cases, and 11 deaths, including three from confirmed cases.

However, according to Tufton, data from the ministry’s epidemiology team on the ground indicates that the rate of new suspected and confirmed cases is slowing.

“We are expecting that it will taper off and hopefully decline to what would be more in keeping with the average rates in the country,” the minister said.

Dr Tufton expressed cautious optimism, noting that the continued fieldwork, surveillance and interventions appear to be yielding positive results.

“I believe the work on the ground is bearing fruit and that hopefully we will see better days ahead,” he added.

The minister assured the public that the ministry will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available in the coming days and weeks.
