An outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed at a farm in the Cayman Islands, and the government is now cautioning owners to pay keen attention to their animals and pets, according to local news agencies.

The Cayman Compass said Monday the government of the Cayman Islands had initiated a rapid response to the discovery of H5N1 avian influenza, or bird flu, in turkeys at a farm in Grand Cayman.

Several of the birds were found dead at the farm on Friday, November 28, and subsequent testing showed that more birds were infected.

On Wednesday, following testing, it was confirmed that 69 other birds of varying species, including chicken, turkey, quail, farmed duck, wild whistling duck and goose, were infected at the farm.

All 69 were culled, the report says, adding that local response agencies have begun to depopulate animals and cull wild birds in the affected area.

No other outbreaks have been reported so far, and no human transmission has been reported.
