Caymanas Park set for Mouttet Mile thunder
...15 horses, US$300,000 on the line
Tomorrow, the hallowed grounds of Caymanas Park will be transformed into the epicentre of Caribbean racing as 15 top-class horses, including international invaders Dothraki and Nautical Star, clash in the fourth running of the Mouttet Mile (Invitational).
With a record US$300,000 purse — the largest in the English-speaking Caribbean — the stakes are sky-high, promising an electrifying battle of speed, skill, stamina, and grit.
The foreign threat is real. Dothraki, trained by Jason DaCosta, is primed to make his mark, with DaCosta’s sharp training backing him to challenge for the title. Nautical Star, under Anthony Nunes, has also been quietly building momentum for success.
But local representatives won’t back down. Tiz Tok is a force to be reckoned with, looking to claim local glory. Legacy Isle is consistent and classy, with a real shot of winning. Supernatural Power brings blazing speed and power to the mix. Rideallday, paired with Hall of Famer jockey Javier Castellano, is gunning for Mouttet Mile gold after his Port Royal Sprint win. Mojito lurks as a dark horse with hidden firepower, even as defending champion Funcaandun seeks back-to-back triumphs, while Girvano is tough, gritty, and dangerous.
With every horse in contention, the Mouttet Mile promises to be a spectacle.
In this special edition of the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide, the team takes a look at each runner, analysing their strengths, weaknesses, and chances of emerging victorious in the coveted Mouttet Mile.
1. FUNCAANDUN (USA): (4 b c by Klimt – Fiftyshadesoffun) — Current Horse of the Year who was dismal in Gold Cup over 7 furlongs (1,400m) and the Jamaica Cup over 9½ furlongs (1,900m). However, this bay colt’s got top credentials. He has two wins from six starts this season plus he won this race last year and so he knows how to get the job done. Don’t count him out as yet because he’s got the pedigree and reputation. Note: Figure-8 on.
2. PACK PLAYS (USA): (4 dk b/br c by Stay Thirsty – Standard Deal) — Brings good pace to the party, but one mile (1,600m) could be a stretch. Expect a strong showing from Pack Plays, but not a win. He might rely on early speed, but stamina’s the question.
3. TIZ TOK (USA): (5 b h by Tiznow – Weekend Prospect) — Slowly but surely getting his act together. Recent improvements, class, and Dane Nelson in the saddle all make him a dark horse threat. If he finds his groove, watch out.
4. LEGACY ISLE (USA): (5 b h by Shackleford – Quuenameina) — Very consistent runner, who has five wins from eight starts this season. Legacy Isle stalked his credentials for the Mouttet Mile with an emphatic Gold Cup win (7 furlongs/1,400m) over the much-talked-about Rideallday, and as last year’s runner-up, he’s primed for revenge. Working really well — could lead home rivals here.
5. DOTHRAKI (USA): (4 b c by Into Mischief – Vanquished) — Got tongues wagging with a 1:05.4 debut (5½ furlongs/1,100m), but a Port Royal Sprint flop raised doubts. Dothraki has been training well. Expect an improved, dangerous run. Will distance and class click? Note: Visor on, Figure-8 on.
6. CHAMPION BUBBLER (USA): (6 b m by Tapiture – Countess Clare) — is a footnote in this tale. Bye-bye, no chance. She’ll be safely bypassed, not a factor.
7. NAUTICAL STAR (USA): (5 dk b/br h by Dixie Chatter – Kiss Me Chocolate) — Makes his local debut hungry for glory. With three wins, two seconds, one third from 11 US starts, Nautical Star is working really well coming into this race — class and talent say he could shock with a win. Anthony Nunes’ charge is primed.
8. SUPERNATURAL POWER (USA): (3 gr f by Cross Traffic – Urquia) — Supernatural Power is firing on all cylinders. She won the Viceroy Trophy (one mile) in 1:36.2 (fastest time this season). In good nick, she’s challenging for top honours. Speed and recent form make her danger.
9. SENSATIONAL SOUL: (3 ch c by Soul Warrior – Red Gold) — Doesn’t belong here. Sensational Soul has no business in this showdown.
10. MAIN MISTRESS (USA): (4 dk b/br f by Mo Town – Timetobegone) — Won’t trouble the big guns. A non-factor in this Mouttet Mile drama.
11. RIDEALLDAY (USA): (3 gr/rn c by Vekoma – Song of Hours) — After his narrow loss to
Legacy Isle in the Gold Cup, Rideallday returned and won the Port Royal Sprint with authority. He has seven wins from nine career starts, an impressive resume that suggests he is one of the top contenders for this coveted prize. He is working well and is expected to decide the outcome of this race.
12. UNSPUN (USA): (3 dk b/br c by Spun to Run – U Needa Ride) — Is going to be left behind in this one.
13. GIRVANO (USA): (3 b c by Girvin – Summer in Midway) — Is improving. Recently beaten by Mojiot in the Jamaica Cup, Girvano is iexpected to run well here. A horse to watch.
14. DIGITAL ONE (USA): (4 b f by Uncle Lino – Legal Redemption) — Going to find the big guns too hot to handle here.
15. MOJITO: (5 gr h by Savoy Stomp – Fiftyshadesofray) — Announced his Mouttet Mile presence when winning the Jamaica Cup on November 16. Mojito won by a length and a quarter in a time 2:02.0. He should not be disgraced here – a threat.
