Portmore United take over JPL lead after MBU slip up

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former champions Portmore United have taken over the lead in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) after beating Waterhouse FC 2-1 in the second game of a double header played at Drewsland on Thursday.

The game marked Portmore United’s fourth win in a row and second since the restart after the stoppage forced by Hurricane Melissa saw them move to 24 points, one more than previous leaders Montego Bay United who played out a 4-4 draw against Harbour View at the Stadium East field earlier in the day.

All three goals in the game came in the first 35 minutes as Tedj Bryan fired Portmore into the lead in the 17th minute but Colorado Murray levelled the scores when he scored in the 22nd minute.

Defender Stephen Young got the winner in the 35th minute as Portmore United claimed their seventh win of the season.

Also on Thursday, defending champions Cavalier SC were ambushed 1-0 by relegation threatened Molynes United while Mount Pleasant FA crushed Tivoli Gardens 5-0 at Drax Hall.

At Stadium East, Harbour View rallied from two goals down twice to earn a hard fought draw against Montego Bay United who have allowed seven goals in their two games since the restart.

Trayvone Reid scored two late goals for a reinvigorated Harbour View who have picked up four points in their two games since the restart and have scored nine of their 17 goals total so far this season.

An own goal by Tyrone Harrison in the 37th minute and the first of a double from Jourdain Fletcher in the 40th minute gave Montego Bay United a 2-0 lead.

Rohan Brown pulled a goal back for Harbour View in the 44th minute but Dwight Merrick responded with a goal in time added at the end of the first half as Montego Bay United led 3-1 at the half time break.

Garth Stewart cut the deficit to one goal a minute into the second half but once again Montego Bay United responded with Fletcher completing his double in the 57th minute as they restored their two goals cushion and led 4-2.

Reid scored his first in the 68th minute to once more cut Harbour View’s deficit to one and then tied up the game at 4-4 with a second goal in the 81st minute.

Molynes United who were just edged 3-2 by Racing United in their previous game, surprised 10 man Cavalier SC to claim their first win of the season.

Marlon Pennicooke scored in the 50th minute for Molynes United who were beating Cavalier SC for the first time after eight straight losses.

To add insult to injury Cavalier SC played the final 13 minutes of the game with 10 men after Denzel McKenzie was sent off in the 77th minute.

Daniel Green and Warner Brown both got braces as Mount Pleasant FA ended Tivoli Gardens’ three games winning run with their biggest loss of the season.

Green opened the scoring when he scored in the 12th minute and Brown added a second in the 28th as Mount Pleasant FA led 2-0 at half time.

Green made it 3-0 in the 56th minute and Rapha Intervil scored the fourth in the 67th minute before Brown completed his brace in the 75th minute.
