Santa Cruz ‘sky juice’ vendor enjoying the fruits of his labour
KINGSTON, Jamaica — During his adult life St Elizabeth resident Junior Nelson ventured into several fields of work which he says were not as successful as he would like.
Recently he operated a hotdog stand in Santa Cruz, however, he had to kick that business to the curb after he struggled to make a living.
These days, he sells crushed shaved ice with syrup or juice in a cup, which Jamaicans refer to as sky juice.
On Thursday, it was a proud Nelson who told the the Jamaica Observer that he is now contended with his business which keeps people refreshed as they bustle through the sun-scorched Santa Cruz.
“I have been doing this three to four months now. A whole heap of other work mi do. I have worked on construction sites tying steel and those things. At one point I was into cooking too. I use to sell hot dog but it wasn’t working out. It was slow. I was doing that near to the market.
“People are buying the sky juice a lot because after Hurricane Melissa, they need something to cool them down in the town. I make a decent living doing this. You have to just know how to deal with people out on the road and respect them. You can get a sky juice for $250 a cup. The flavours I have are fruit punch and pineapple,” said Nelson.
