Two cops granted bail of $200,000 in relation to 2023 assault incident
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Two policemen were each granted bail in the sum of $200,000 after they were charged with assaulting a man on September 1, 2023 at the Highgate Police Station in St Mary.
Corporal Brown and Constable Murphy have been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ruling that they be charged.
According to an Indecom release, during the investigation, the cops denied assaulting the man, however medical evidence and an eyewitness corroborated the complainant’s account.
The allegation is that the complainant was hit in the face by the policemen while handcuffed at the police station.
He was subsequently granted bail and sought medical attention.
During their court appearance, Corporal Brown and Constable Murphy were each granted bail in the sum of $200,000.00.
Indedom said since January 2024, 54 law enforcement officers have been charged in relation to incidents investigated by the commission.
Twenty-eight officers in 2024 and a further 26 officers in 2025.
Corporal Brown had reportedly previously been charged this year, on September 17, 2025, for wounding with intent.
