Jamaican football officials head to Qatar for high-level FIFA meetings

Jamaica’s influence in global football governance is expected to see considerable growth as several local administrators depart the island on Sunday for high-level FIFA meetings in Qatar after their recent appointments to influential committees within the organisation.

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) President Michael Ricketts, as well as Technical Committee Chairman Rudolph Speid and women’s football administrator Carlene Edwards, will all attend meetings relating to their new roles within FIFA, marking a rare moment of simultaneous representation at this level in the critical areas of grass roots, technical development, and women’s football.

Ricketts, who will serve as deputy chairman of the Grassroots and Amateur Football Committee, says this represents both personal pride and a unique opportunity for Jamaica’s football development.

“In a JFF board meeting on Thursday, I expressed my happiness at being able to serve my country. This is a global appointment…I do hope that I will be able to influence FIFA to ensure that not just the Caribbean, but my country, gets some special attention as we try to grow the sport of football,” Ricketts told the Sunday Observer.

“We will be looking forward to taking very positive influences out of this week of meetings. I’m just hopeful that we’ll be able to translate and to influence our own football competitions and development. So I’m very excited at the prospects.”

Ricketts highlighted the combined strength of the island’s representation at the meetings, which begin on Tuesday.

Speid was appointed to the Technical Committee, while Edwards, a key figure behind the Club Licensing programme and the resumption of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League, was named to the Women’s National Team Competitions Committee.

“There are scores of opportunities, with Speid being a part of the technical committee, Carlene being a part of women’s and, of course, yours truly being a part of grass roots, we are hoping that all three of us, after we return from our sojourn in Qatar and having had intense discussions, that we will be able to take back from our meetings some very positive ideas, and not just ideas, but financial support,” Ricketts said.

Speid, who will sit among FIFA’s technical decision-makers, sees the opportunity as both validating and instructive.

“I am looking forward to meeting the people on my committee. There are a lot of competent persons in there and I am looking forward to seeing what my roles and responsibilities will be and to get a good understanding of how other countries operate with regards to technical development,” Speid said.

“It’s really fulfilling. I am someone who always wants to get new knowledge, so after years of working with the JFF trying to improve our ecosystems, it’s fulfilling that I have been recognised at this point in time, and it’s very good that the world believes that I have something to offer to football. We will be able to give FIFA committee members an idea of what actually happens in Jamaica and also our voice will be heard. I’m sure we have ideas that we want to impart too, and hopefully, whatever happens and whatever decisions are taken by our committees, it will help Jamaica in the future.”

Edwards’ appointment to the Women’s National Team Competitions Committee comes at a critical point with Jamaica’s women’s programme continue to earn global regard, the resumption of the local league, and the region preparing to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

“I’m looking forward to gaining first-hand insight into how decisions are made at the highest level of women’s football, while engaging with stakeholders from across the world. That exposure will help me contribute meaningfully to global discussions and bring valuable knowledge and best practices back to strengthen Jamaica’s women’s national team programmes at every level,” Edwards said.

She described the opportunity as humbling and meaningful.

“This is an absolutely amazing and humbling opportunity. Having served football in various capacities over many years, primarily at the local level, being able to now contribute at the international level is something I hold very dear. It reflects years of service to football in various administrative and developmental roles and comes with a profound sense of responsibility to represent Jamaica with integrity, to honour the work of those who came before me, to support those contributing now, and to help open doors for the next generation, while ensuring that developing football nations have a meaningful voice at the global level,” Edwards said.

“This means a great deal for Jamaica. Being involved in discussions at the highest level allows us to better understand global priorities and identify opportunities that can directly benefit our women’s football programme. It also positions Jamaica to take greater advantage of FIFA’s development initiatives as we continue to grow the sport locally. With the 2031 Women’s World Cup coming to our region, this is a timely opportunity for Jamaica to strategically position itself and ensure the world continues to see the depth of talent that exists not only in Jamaica, but across the Caribbean,” added Edwards, a noted marketing executive with the JN Group.

“I am also deeply grateful for the support and understanding of my employer, The JN Group, specifically to my CEO, Earl Jarrett, whose encouragement has made it possible for me to take on this temporary role while continuing to fulfil my full-time professional responsibilities.”

Several other Jamaicans are expected to be in Qatar, including former Reggae Boyz captain and National U-20 Head Coach Ricardo Gardner, who also does work with the FIFA Training Centre.

In addition to the meetings, FIFA will host committee members at the finals of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Arab Cup.
