ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) says the alleged actions of one of its soldiers, accused of discharging a firearm in a public place in St Elizabeth on Christmas Day, are inconsistent with the standards and core values expected of its members.

The soldier, 30-year-old Private Rushane Brown of Comfort Hall, Manchester, has since been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Reports indicate that about 5:15 am, Brown was confronted by an off-duty cop after he was reportedly seen firing two shots into the air.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the JDF said it does not condone unlawful, reckless or irresponsible behaviour by any of its members, whether on or off duty. The force said the actions allegedly attributed to Brown are inconsistent with the values, standards and professional conduct expected of all service members.

The JDF added that it is cooperating fully with the Jamaica Constabulary Force to ensure that the matter is thoroughly and transparently addressed.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of discipline, accountability and service to the people of Jamaica, assuring the public that incidents of this nature are treated with the utmost seriousness.
