Stardom shines in debut win
Gary Subratie is cautious not to get too excited, but he’s clearly impressed with
Stardom’s debut performance on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
The bay colt, Stardom (Sensational Slam – Triniket Box) a full-brother to former Jamaica Derby and St Leger winner Calculus, lived up to expectations, winning by 9½ lengths in the maiden special weight contest for native-bred two-year-olds over six furlongs (1,200m).
Stardom’s winning time of 1:16.0 was not that impressive, but he showed plenty of class to beat
Another Wow (Raddesh Roman) and Another Quality (Javaniel Patterson).
Subratie believes he’s got a talent horse in Stardom, and, given his pedigree, there’s a lot to look forward to.
“He was training good coming into the race, but he’s not quite ready as yet. He’s learning, he’s coming on nicely, he’s still a baby, and he’s still green,” Subratie told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“You know, I wanted him to be ready for the mile [Wayne daCosta Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes] at the end of the year, but he wasn’t getting himself together enough and so I just gave him this race to bring him on.
“He is going to win a lot of races. I mean, he is only 58 per cent right now and he so he should a lot better later on. The performance was very good. The jockey was very excited about him; he is
Calculus’s full brother and so expectations are there,” Subratie added.
Stardom’s impressive debut win was made even more remarkable by his slow start. The bay colt had to overcome a hesitant start, while Another Wow’s gate jamming allowed Another Quality to seize the early lead. However, Stardom’s powerful surge from the three-furlong pole left the field in his dust.
Accelerating with ease, Stardom took command two and a half furlongs out and cruised to a convincing win. Another Wow’s late rally earned him second, but it was Stardom’s show all the way.
