Schoolboy footballers to showcase talents in exhibition games

THE cream of the crop of Jamaica’s high schoolboy football talent will be on parade this afternoon with the playing of the all-daCosta versus all-Manning match at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

The game will be the feature of a double-header, with the academic all-star selections from both competitions set to kick off at 1:30 pm.

The activities on the field will double as a showcase for United States college scouts.

Two days after urban Manning Cup champions Excelsior High defeated rural daCosta Cup winners St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) 2-0 in the Olivier Shield play-off at Stadium East, approximately 90 of the island’s top schoolboy players will hope to impress.

Earlier this week, the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) released the list of invitees for both games.

Given that players from Excelsior and St Elizabeth Technical might have limited minutes after Thursday’s exertions, a number of other players are expected to get the chance to showcase their talents.

In the feature game the champions, STETHS and Excelsior, each got six selections from their respective squads.

STETHS had beaten Glenmuir High on penalties in the daCosta Cup final last month, after they had played out a 0-0 draw, while Excelsior High had beaten Jamaica College 2-0 in the Manning Cup final.

Johnoi Steadman, who was named Best Goalkeeper in the daCosta Cup; Kaieem Lewis, who shared the Golden Boot trophy; central defenders Dantay Hewitt and Malachi McMaster; and midfielders Deandre Barnett and Jade Lynch, are the players from STETHS.

Conroy Nicely, O’Neil Headley, Dunstin Cohen, Orane Watson and Orel Miller are the players from Glenmuir High who were selected while Carlondo Morris, goalkeeper Carlyle Tingling, and Mekhi Foster were the players from Cornwall College.

Kimarly Scott and Kivann Salmon, who scored in the Manning Cup final, lead the Excelsior High players in the all-Manning team. They are joined by goalkeeper Jamari Gordon, Shamarie Chambers, Damarley Williams and Terrence Williams.

Dujoni Thompson and Dontae Logan are among the Jamaica College players who include centr -back Donald Stewart and midfielders Jabari Howell and Jamone Lyle.
