Man denied bail in WhatsApp malicious communication case
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A foreign national who allegedly sent threats that he had put a “hit” on his landlord’s daughter was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Shawn Hosang, who is accused of overstaying and use of a computer for malicious communication, has been in custody for eight months, his attorney indicated.
In making a bail application for Hosang, the attorney cited the man’s 72-year-old mother whom he said has no other caregiver but her son, as well as the fact that the case file is not expected to be completed until March.
However, the crown strongly opposed bail, indicating that there was a possibility of interference with the complainants, who had indicated via statement that they still live in fear of the accused.
Hosang, who arrived on the island in February 2007, had been a tenant of the complainants.
Allegedly, the accused repeatedly used electronic communication, including WhatsApp, to send threatening messages to the complainants.
One message, which the crown indicated was sent in December 2024, said: “Just be prepared for your daughter to be slaughtered, I swear.”
It continued, “Your daughter will be murdered and you f****** deserve it.”
Another message reportedly said: “I am enjoying knowing your kid is gonna get killed and you’re just waiting in fear.”
The crown read out more messages, sent in February 2025, which said, “I am actually going to have your daughter killed, you can’t be surprised.”
The crown indicated that some of the messages had been sent via voice message, and the complainants identified the voice as that of the accused.
While the defence argued that measures could be put in place to protect the complainants, including relocation of the accused, bail was denied by sitting judge Alwayne Smith.
The accused is to return to court on the 26th of March.
