KC, Immaculate take lead in Corporate Area Champs

DEFENDING champions Kingston College (KC) and Immaculate Conception High are the leaders of the respective boys’ and girls’ sections of the Corporate Area Championships heading into the final day at Ashenheim Stadium on Saturday.

Up to press time on Friday with nine finals completed, KC, who started the day 15 points adrift of Jamaica College (JC), led with 102 points. JC were second on 93 points, with Calabar High occupying third spot on 53 points.

The next in line are Excelsior High (35), Wolmer’s Boys’ (16), Campion College (14), St George’s College (6), Camperdown High (4), and Edith Dalton James (1).

Immaculate Conception (109 points) were well on their way to winning their first Corporate Area title, establishing a 20-point lead. Defending champions Excelsior High (89) were second, with early leaders Convent of Mercy Academy “Alpha” slipping to third spot with 82.33 points.

Wolmer’s Girls’ were fourth on 56.5, just ahead of Merl Grove High on 48, Campion College (35.5), St Andrew High (33.33) and The Queen’s School on 30.33. St Hugh’s High are ninth on 13 points and Holy Childhood in 10th on seven points.

Earlier, Jaeda Robinson of Immaculate Conception won the first final on Friday, leaping to 5.58m to win the girls’ Class One long jump ahead of Merl Grove’s Tatanya Anglin with 5.43m. Third spot went to Janielle Lowe of Wolmer’s with 5.38m.

In the first boys’ final there was a huge upset as KC’s Jurel Clement won the javelin open with 55.41m. His teammate Kimari Smith was second with 47.62m, while Champs record holder Tarique Daley of Calabar High was third with 45.88m.

JC started the day on 29 points to KC’s 14, and the gap was closed significantly to just four points as KC picked up 16 points to JC’s five. Calabar picked up nine points and moved into third spot on 15 points.

KC took their first lead of the championships after picking up another massive 16 points in the boys’ Class Two long jump, while JC collected five points.

Alexander Pusey leapt to 7.05m on his final attempt for gold while his teammate Alex King was second with 6.83m. Shamar Shaw of Calabar was third with 6.96m and Nicotroy Green of JC fourth with 6.62m.

After the 1500m finals, JC picked up 40 points to KC’s 30, despite KC winning two events in Class Three and Class One.

KC’s Julius Itubo smashed the Class Three record of 4:18.93, lowering it to 4:05.51 — his personal best. He shrugged off the challenge of the much-improved Rickardo Lee in the process, who was second in 4:10.98 and who had inflicted a rare defeat on Itubo in the 800m earlier this year. JC’s Mickoy Saunder was third on Friday in 4:33.80.

JC picked up maximum 16 points in Class Two as Cavel Nooks (4:17.68) won ahead of his teammate Bevin Davey in 4:17.73. Campion College’s Cameron Brown was third in 4:21.43.

In Class One, Kenya’s Ruto, looking improved and stronger, went to the front and repelled the early challenge of Ghana’s Dominic Amponsah of JC to win in a personal best of 4:03.44. Rasheed Pryce of JC was second in 4:08.10 and Amarii Brightly of Campion College third with 4:11.61. Amponsah faded to fifth with 4:14.13.

In the girls’ Class Three 1500m, Alpha’s Danoya Scott won in a meet record 4:57.96, well ahead of Keona James of Merl Grove High in 5:16.87. Gabrielle Wellinhton of Campion College was third in 5:17.26. In fact, Scott’s time was even quicker than the girls in Class Two and Class One.

In Class Two, Kyah Anderson of The Queen’s School won in 5:07.93, with Netanya Robinson of Immaculate Conception second with 5:09.35. Ashanti Park of Alpha took Class One in 5:21.83.

KC scored big points in the Class One long jump courtesy of Omarion Miller with 7.30m (-0.1), achieved on his fourth attempt. His teammate Amani Phillips was second with 6.95m, with Calabar’s Shevaughn Pryce third with 6.95m.

Shaniel Whyte of Wolmer’s Girls’ captured the Class Three high jump with 1.65m and handed a rare defeat to Sanique Watt of Immaculate who was second, also with 1.65m. Tyanna Troupe of Alpha was third with 1.60m.

Rajana Price of Alpha took the Class Two long jump with 5.83m, ahead of Stefvanco Heny of Campion College with 5.75m, while Immaculate’s Zoelle Jamel broke the javelin open record with 42.09m — well over the previous record of 39.75m.

Alyssa Forrester of Excelsior High won the girls’ Class Two shot put with a throw of 14.10m. Immaculate’s Jamie Lee Tulloch was second with 13.21m.

Excelsior’s Riquelme Reid was in superb form, easing to an impressive 20.95 (+2.0), looking all over the place, and is expected to go faster in the final on Saturday.

KC’s Emmile Higgins threw down the gauntlet in Class Two, stopping the clock at 21.12 (2.8), and was quickest into the final, follwed by Kai Kelly of JC with 21.65.
