G2K slams PNP for failure to condemn & expel confessed wife-killer, Jolyan Silvera
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Generation 2000 (G2K) has slammed the People National Party (PNP) for what it says is the party’s silence on Jolyan Silvera’s admission that he gunned his wife down and the party’s failure to expel the former West St Mary Member of Parliament.
In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) said it is heartbroken at the death of Silvera’s wife and again wishes to extend sincere condolences to her family and friends.
G2K says it believes that a family’s personal and painful loss should not be used to advance a political agenda and it wishes to caution anyone who may be so disposed to refrain from any such activity.
However, according to G2K, it believes that when instances arise where members of a political organisation are implicated in serious wrongdoing, society as a whole, including the particular political party with which the individual is associated, has a duty to take a certain course of action that sends an appropriate public message.
“In light of confessed wife-killer and former Member of Parliament for Western St Mary, the PNP’s Jolyan Silvera’s admission in court that he violently killed his wife by firing three shots at her, and the acceptance of his guilty plea by the Court, we are of the view that several serious points are to be made. We find it disappointing, but not surprising, that the PNP has not acted to discipline Silvera by way of expulsion and has not strongly condemned him after he admitted to a most wicked and evil act”, G2K said.
The young professional group says the failure of the PNP to promptly announce that Silvera has been expelled shows that the Mark Golding-led party is not serious when they speak about domestic violence and treating with violent crime as a whole.
“It is clear that the PNP, including its Women’s organisation, only gives lip service to the scourge when it is politically convenient for them to do so”, G2K charged.
The organisation said it notes that in the lead-up to his arrest, Silvera was a “visible member of the road team of PNP President Mark Golding, often holding Golding’s umbrella”.
G2K further noted that the PNP president had initially announced via his social media pages that the former politician’s wife “passed away.”
This post, the youth group says, assisted in spreading the misleading narrative that she had died in her sleep or from natural causes.
“We hope that the failure of the PNP to discipline the confessed wife-killer, Jolyan Silvera, is not a sign of their willingness to protect a man who was charged with murder and has admitted to violently killing his wife and leaving her young children to discover her body. G2K strongly condemns Silvera’s vile actions. No punishment is too great for his wicked deeds. The PNP and its women’s movement’s treatment of the vile actions of one of its most prominent members shows that it has no credibility to speak on the topic of respecting and protecting our nation’s women”, G2K said.
G2K said it is also calling on senior PNP members and a well controversial PNP blogger to clear the air concerning the nature of their intervention when they visited Silvera’s home after she was shot dead by their close colleague, the PNP representative.
