Portmore can go second in JPL with win over Treasure Beach
Portmore United could take over second place in the Jamaica Premier League on Wednesday, if they can beat Treasure Beach for the first time this season.
Portmore are in fourth place on 47 points after opening the third round with a 4-2 victory over struggling Harbour View on Sunday and would pass Racing United and Mount Pleasant FA into second place with a win but but have yet to beat 11th-placed Treasure Beach so far this season.
Also today, leaders Montego Bay United are back home at Jarrett Park to face Dunbeholden while Waterhouse will seek to rebound from their biggest loss of the season when they travel to face Molynes United.
Three more games are scheduled to be played on Thursday.
Despite the gap between the teams in the points tables — Portmore United once again positioned squarely in the race for a top-four spot while Treasure Beach struggle at the bottom of the table in a fight for league survival — when it comes to these two teams facing each other, there have been little between them in two games played so far this season.
Treasure Beach had beaten Portmore United 2-0 in their first meeting before coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in their second-round contest.
The boys from St Elizabeth are coming off a slim 1-0 loss to defending champions Cavalier on Sunday and will hope they can at least hold on for a draw today and once again spoil the ambitions of their more facied opponents.
Portmore’s win on Sunday had ended a three games run without victory but they will be well aware of the dangers that lay in wait as the push to continue on that trajector. A lot of that intention will rest with Tedj Bryan, who scored a double on Sunday.
In the second city, MBU’s confidence will be high coming off a big ‘statement’ win away to Waterhouse FC, who had won the previous two games between the teams and will be going after a sixth straight victory over Dunbeholden today.
Sunday’s win ended a run of three games without a victory for MBU and also ended a run of five games when they failed to score more than two goals in any game. Montego Bay is the most prolific team in front of goal this season with 49 goals so far in the campaign.
Head coach Xavier Gilbert would have been pleased that four different players scored including Kimani Arbouine and Malachi Sterling, who got their first goals of the season.
Meanwhile, Dunbeholden have lost back-to-back games but a win today would see them move closer to a play-off spot.
Waterhouse will hope to rebound immediately after Sunday’s battering and will also be looking to avenge a second round loss to Molynes United.
Molynes, who are four points above the relegation zone, have won just once in 2026, in mid-January, a run of 10 games.
Even a draw today, depending on the results at STETHS, could see Molynes swap places with Treasure Beach as the race for survival heats up.
