#Champs2026: Hydel’s Zavien Bernard wins girls’ triple jump
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Hydel High’s Zavien Bernard won her second gold medal in as many days after she produced a final round personal best 12.65m (-0.7m/s) effort to win the triple jump open on Friday’s fourth day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
Bernard, who won the Class 1 long jump on Thursday, was passed by her teammate Sabrina Atkinson in the final round before winning with the final jump of the competition.
She had jumped 12.23m and 12.32m to put herself in pole position until Atkinson jumped a personal best 12.43m (-1.7m/s) to move from fourth place into the lead. However, minutes later, Bernard restored her lead by beating her previous best of 12.63m set earlier in the year.
Edwin Allen’s Akaylea Brown, who won the Class 1 high jump earlier in the day, won her second medal when she took the bronze with 12.17m (-0.3m/s), also a lifetime best.
