Jai Kingston takes listeners down memory lane on Back to Foundation Medley
Two years ago, music minister and gospel recording artiste Jai Kingston emerged the big winner at the Sterling Gospel Music Awards when he took home a staggering four awards from a total of six nominations.
He continues his winning ways with Back to Foundation Medley, which was released on March 1.
The powerful, hand-clapping and sing-along medley features some well-known gospel songs that Christians have grown to love over the years.
“I was preparing to lead worship at church when the thought of ‘old school’ came, so I was guided by my early days as a young Christian and the songs that had an impact on my life. I wanted to bring back a memory or moment for myself and to everyone who will listen,” Jai Kingston told the Jamaica Observer on Thursday.
Back to Foundation Medley includes songs such as Lively Up Yourself, Sing Praises Unto, He Set Me Free, I Wanna Hear the Story, Redeemed, Jesus is Coming Soon, You Can Tell the World, The Blood Prevails, Thank God for the Cleansing Blood, You’re Excellent Jesus, and One Way Jesus.
The song was not intended to be a part of any musical project; however, based on the response that it has received since its release, Jai Kingston says it may end up on a project.
“Initially, I wasn’t thinking of an entire project, but now I am, so I’ll keep you posted on the release and title,” he shared.
Jai Kingston became a born-again Christian shortly before his teenage years.
“I became a Christian at the tender age of 12 years old, and I have never regretted it. He saved me from a life of crime and lawlessness, growing up in a violent community where being tough and rough was the only option to remain safe. He took my poverty and made me rich in mind, spirit, and good things,” Jai Kingston recalled.
He has a message for non-Christians.
“Jesus is the only way, truth, and life. Outside of Him is a lot of nothing. You will search for long and still not find happiness or peace until you make Jesus your true way of life,” Jai Kingston reasoned, while sharing his relationship with the Lord. “He is my Father and King, I am His son, so our relationship is rooted in love and submission to His will.”
Jai Kingston (real name Wayne Nesta Buchanan) grew up in August Town. He was inspired by different artistes, including Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson, Beres Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, and Grace Thrillers.
“Overall, I listen to everyone locally, regionally, and internationally as long as the music is good food. My inspiration is God and life,” he stated.
He began his trod in gospel music in 1997 and has been a member of Nadine Blair’s Perpetual Praise Team, Katalys Crew, and the group Total Praise.
Total Praise was a finalist in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Gospel Song competition and made it to the top 10 with the song Turn Your Eyes.
He went solo in 2006.
His better-known songs include I Surrender, Save Me, Rags to Riches, and Can’t Take My Lord.
