US plans to automatically register men for military draft eligibility

American men between the ages of 18 and 25 could automatically be registered into the United States military draft pool by December 2026, according to a new rule proposed by the government agency, Selective Service System (SSS).

According to a report by the BBC, the SSS submitted the proposal to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30 and will see young men being registered into the military automatically rather than being asked to do so within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

This new proposal reportedly is expected to save the US government millions of dollars that is spent each year to remind those eligible individuals that they are required by law to register between 18 and 25.

The new plan will transfer responsibility for registration from individual men to the SSS through the integration with federal data sources.

According to the BBC, this new rule is still being reviewed and must be approved for implementation.
