Shaggy scores 13th entry on Billboard Rhythmic Airplay
Looking Lovely by Shaggy featuring R&B/pop singer Robin Thicke, has given Shaggy his 13th entry on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart.
The song, one of the nuggets from Shaggy’s forthcoming album Lottery (due for release May 15), debuts at #40 on this week’s chart.
Shaggy already has two leaders, with It Wasn’t Me (featuring Ricardo “Rik Rok” Ducent hitting #1 in 2000) and Angel (featuring Rayvon) topping the chart in early 2001.
Looking Lovely is the 6th between Shaggy and a male artiste to scale the Rhythmic Airplay chart.
The song has given Shaggy his third entry on the chart in less than a year.
Til a Mawnin featuring Sting rose to #35 in July last year, while in February, Boom Body featuring Akon and Aidonia topped out at #28.
And some more trivia about Looking Lovely: The song samples the Bill Withers 1977 hit Lovely Day, which rose to #6 on Billboard’s R&B chart and #30 on the Hot 100. Trinidadian Ralph McDonald played percussion on the song.
Thicke was a toddler at 8 months when Lovely Day was released in November 1977.
And finally, Lovely Day returned to the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992 when it was covered by the S.O.U.L S.Y.S.T.E.M featuring Michelle Visage of the group Seduction. This version, which was featured on the soundtrack to the Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner film The Bodyguard, was produced by C&C Music Factory’s Robert Clivilles and David Cole. Clivilles and Cole are best known for producing the pop/dance #1 hits Everybody Dance Now (Gonna Make You Sweat) and Strike It Up among others for C&C Music Factory.
