One dead, another injured in Mandela Highway shooting
KINGSTON, Jamaica — One man is dead and another is in hospital following a shooting on the Mandela Highway on Friday morning that has left the westbound lane, heading towards Spanish Town and Portmore, blocked as police conduct investigations.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7:15 am when a Ford Transit motor truck was travelling westbound along the Mandela Highway and reached the intersection with Caymanas. The police said the driver came to a stop shortly after, when two men on a motorcycle rode up alongside the right side of the vehicle and opened fire through the right front window and windshield.
Two occupants were struck by bullets and rushed to hospital, where one was pronounced dead and the other admitted for treatment.
The police have since cordoned off the area and are carrying out investigations, with traffic diverted. Motorists have been advised to use the toll road or alternative routes.
Observer Online understands that the police believe the driver of the vehicle, said to be a prominent businessman from Spanish Town, may have been the intended target. The deceased has not yet been identified.
