After over a year of intense preparation, the newly rebranded Immaculate Dance Society (IDS) successfully staged its inaugural début production, the powerful ‘Uprising’ on Sunday, April 26.

The society’s remarkable growth and transformation under the leadership and tutelage of dance teacher and practitioner Shaneaka Gibbs, was on full display in the school’s transformed patio in front of an enthusiastic audience of over 1,000 patrons. For them, Uprising delivered an impressive display of talent, passion, dedication, and technical excellence, marking a defining moment in the society’s evolution.

According to Gibbs, “The school administration gave us a mandate, that they wanted more from dance — something that showed resilience after the tumult of last year, especially in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. Uprising came out of this mandate, and spoke not only of the society’s rise, but the rise in support, the importance of community; an embracing of cultural knowledge, exhibiting uncommon faith, and believing in our talent.”

The full show comprised 17 pieces, demonstrating IDS’s versatility and depth.

Most of the dances were choreographed by Gibbs herself, supported by contributions from guest choreographers Navesha Vickers, Jonae Virgo, Shadayna Gayle, and Jessica Shaw, further enriching the artistic scope of the show.

The production took patrons through a series of emotions evoked from praise and worship pieces to those paying homage to regional cultural art forms, and high-energy modern contemporary and urban offerings.

Formerly known as the Immaculate Dance Troupe, the society’s rebrand represents more than a name change. It signals an elevated standard in capacity, discipline, and performance quality. It is a shift towards professional-level output realized in Uprising.

This successful début production marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Immaculate Dance Society, with audiences and supporters eagerly anticipating what comes next.

“We are excited to continue building on a now strongly established foundation, for the growth, development, fulfilment, and self-actualisation of our members, and for solidifying the name of the Immaculate Conception High School in this space,”Gibbs said.
