Motorists and pedestrians urged to obey new traffic lights at Fairfield intersection
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) is urging pedestrians and motorists to obey the new traffic signals installed at the Fairfield Road/ Megabyte Drive intersection.
The lights are now operational after being turned on by the NWA on Thursday morning, providing a new level of safety on the corridor.
“Pedestrians and motorists are encouraged to obey the traffic signals,” Community Relations Officer for the Western Region, Janel Ricketts, told Observer Online following the activity.
However, she called on pedestrians specifically to utilise the roadway in the manner that is in keeping with the infrastructure now in place.
“For pedestrians, there is a pedestrian-actuated signal there that will help to make crossing of this corridor easier, so we encourage persons to cross at the lights,” she said.
“They’ll first engage the signal, press the signal on the traffic light…and then wait until the walk signal is visible, then make their way across,” she added.
The project is a joint effort by Barnett Tech Park Limited and the National Works Agency to provide increased safety for motorists and individuals who traverse the area.
“The project was completed at a cost of $18.4 million and is aimed at improving safety at this critical intersection,” she said.
Barnett Tech Park is home to a number of business processing outsourcing (BPO) enterprises and other commercial developments.
