A century on the road
For some owners cars can be treasures, figuratively and literally, and in the case of Mandeville car collector Victor Dixon his 1926 Chevrolet Superior is the latter.
This year, the classic Chevy turns 100 years old, marking a century of roadworthiness.
“I acquired the car in 2008 because of the age and condition it was in,” Dixon told the Jamaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.
The car was purchased locally from its previous owner in St Andrew.
The Chevrolet Superior Series V began production in 1926 as a competitor to the Ford Model T. Available in several body styles, it was powered by a carburetted 2.8-litre OHV inline four-cylinder engine that made 26bhp at 2000rpm and could achieve a maximum speed of 50mph.
The Superior is noteworthy as it introduced features such as Duco lacquer paint and a three-speed sliding transmission.
Production numbers mark Dixon’s car as one of the 486,366 made.
“The car was in very good condition. It was well maintained by the previous owner and able to start and drive,” said Dixon.
He and his team at his classic car rental business, Victours, have been keeping the Superior running with thorough maintenance.
“We have not had issues having it registered. It only drives for special occasions as the car is currently being used for photo shoots, weddings, special events,” Dixon said.
The car will be on display at the next Jamaica Classic Car Club monthly link-up, scheduled for May 17 in Mandeville, Manchester.
