Life lessons
Reggae artiste Mystic Bowie learnt much from his mom
For singer Mystic Bowie one of the most important lessons about life that his mother taught him before she passed away almost 20 years ago was that of perseverance.
“The main life lesson that my mama taught me was, ‘You will never learn to walk if you are afraid to fall, and the longer you stay down when you fall, it’s harder to get up.’ “
The artiste shared that, among other things, such gems is the central reason he decided to release the song
Mother’s Love.
“It is a deeply personal tribute that honours the strength, sacrifice, and unconditional care of mothers,” Mystic Bowie shared in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
He went on to explain that the inspiration behind the track came from real-life experiences, particularly the unwavering dedication of his own mother.
“Mother’s Love was inspired by the devotion, nurture, and hard work that mothers give to their children, even when the father is not around. My mother was that example and, in many cases, men have had to play that role too,” he said.
The song carries a powerful message.
“Never take a mother’s job lightly. A good mother will always have your back,” Mystic Bowie emphasised, noting that the song reflects 100 per cent of his personal life story.
Adding an international appeal to the production was also key for the seasoned artiste.
“I wanted to give the song a global flavour and dynamic, because most of my fans are not Jamaicans,” he explained, while expressing pride in the final product.
Mystic Bowie said this Mother’s Day holds deep meaning for him.
“It’s very personal. With the absence of a father, my mother had to play both roles,” he revealed, adding that both his mother and a guiding maternal figure helped shape his life and music through discipline and tough love.
Reflecting on his career, the singer described his journey as “steady and successful”, crediting self-discipline, self-respect, and positioning himself in the right spaces.
Key moments, he said, include transforming personal trauma into music and using creativity as an outlet during difficult times.
Mystic Bowie’s mother, Beryl Smith, affectionately known as Miss Beryl, was a Maroon from Lacovia in St Elizabeth. She passed away from breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 67.
“The relationship was bittersweet, because she sometimes take out her anger for my father’s disappearance on me, by saying hurtful things. However, I never hold it against her, because she was trying her best as a single mother, and I was just being a rough, curious, high-energy boy,” he recalled.
