Brownskin Rae taps into faith and self-reflection with upcoming single ‘Father’

Dancehall entertainer Brownskin Rae is embracing a more spiritual and introspective direction with the release of her upcoming single Father, a heartfelt track centred on faith, personal growth and resilience.

Scheduled for release on May 22, the single showcases a different layer of the artiste, who has built a reputation for balancing melodic vocals with gritty deejay energy. This time, however, Brownskin Rae is leaning heavily into conscious themes and messages of encouragement.

“I have been yearning to write more conscious songs,” she revealed. “I still have the talent to create secular music and I still listen to it, but my desire to make those type of songs is slowly dissipating.”

The entertainer said the song was created to inspire listeners to remain prayerful, authentic and spiritually grounded, especially during life’s most difficult moments.

“When you’re going through things, sometimes we don’t feel comfortable discussing them with anybody, but you can always call on God,” she shared.

Like many of her previous releases, Father draws heavily from Brownskin Rae’s personal experiences and emotional journey, touching on accountability, grace and inner healing.

“I’m not perfect, but I ask God for grace and mercy,” she said. “Most of my songs are based on personal experiences.”

Musically, the track maintains the artiste’s signature fusion of singing and deejaying layered over emotionally driven production, creating a sound that feels both vulnerable and empowering.

The inspiration behind the song came unexpectedly while Brownskin Rae was shopping for a refrigerator for her mother’s house. During the outing, she connected with a man named Odane, who later introduced her to producer Gargon through a phone call.

After hearing several instrumentals created by Gargon and Cucudon, one particular beat immediately resonated with her.

“I let the beat sit for about a week, then one day I woke up and wrote the song,” she recalled.

The track was initially recorded with Supreme before Brownskin Rae later linked with Feel Good Boss, who encouraged the project and recommended engineer G1 to finalise the production. Production credits for Father include Gargon, Cucudon, Supreme, Feel Good Boss and engineer G1.

While the song represents a noticeable evolution in her artistry, Brownskin Rae says spirituality has always been a major part of her identity.

“This side of me isn’t new. I’ve always been a strong, prayerful person,” she explained. “Life lessons and wisdom are steering me more now than before.”

Reflecting on her journey as an independent artiste within dancehall, Brownskin Rae admitted the path has come with challenges, disappointments and moments of redirection, experiences she now views as necessary for her growth.

“I’ve never tried to portray myself as another artiste or fit into a mold,” she said. “I believe if a door didn’t open, it was divine protection and timing.”

The artiste also revealed that Father will appear on an upcoming three-track EP alongside Sunrize and Cyah Give Up, with the full project expected to arrive before July.
