Lloyd Parks steps up to the mic
For the past six months, bassist Lloyd Parks has relaunched his career as a singer.
Police and Thieves, the first song in that campaign, is scheduled for release in June.
The self-produced single is a cover of Junior Murvin’s classic from 1976.
“It’s a song I always like, and whenever I perform it on shows I get good response. So, I decided to do a rendition of it,” Parks told the Jamaica Observer.
In addition to singing, he played bass on the song.
Keyboardist Franklyn “Bubber” Waul and drummer Peter Samaru accompanied him on the track.
Since late 2025, Parks has been building a strong following and has done shows as a bassist-singer locally and in Germany, Argentina, and Brazil — where he first toured with Dennis Brown during the early 1980s.
The shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Sao Paolo, Brazil, took place in March. They were part of Rockers, alongside singer Kiddus-I and drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, stars of the 1978 movie of the same name.
Parks is synonymous with the We The People, the band he started in 1974. He also made his name as a leading session musician, playing on countless hit songs, among them
Everything I Own by Ken Boothe and Love Has Found Its Way by Dennis Brown.
He started his career in the 1960s as a singer with The Termites and also did a stint with The Techniques.
In the 1970s Parks had hit songs with Slaving and Officially, as well as Reservation For Two in 1983.
