Public buildings to be renamed in honour of Portia Simpson Miller and Lynden Newland
THE Ministry of Labour and Social Security building at 1F North Street will be renamed in honour of former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller today.
In addition, the ministry’s building at 14 National Heroes’ Circle will be named in honour of the late Lynden Newland, former minister of labour and national insurance.
According to Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange, the renaming of the buildings will pay tribute to two distinguished Jamaicans in recognition of their outstanding contributions to national development.
Grange noted that renaming the buildings forms part of Workers’ Week 2026 celebrations which officially commenced with the national church service held in Montego Bay on Sunday, May 17.
Workers’ Week and Labour Day activities were observed under the theme ‘One People, One Purpose: In All Things Jamaica Wins’.
The ceremony honouring Newland will start at 10:00 am at 14 National Heroes’ Circle, followed immediately by a second ceremony in honour of Simpson Miller at 1F North Street.
Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness will deliver the keynote address.
