Beryllium confirms death of burn victim, others flown overseas for treatment
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Beryllium Limited has confirmed that one of four people injured in an explosion and fire at a garage on South Camp Road in Kingston adjacent to its facility, on Wednesday, has died.
In a news release, the courier company also shared that two of the three survivors were flown out of the country on Thursday for treatment at burn centres in the United States.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm that one of the individuals injured in the incident, an external contractor performing work within the garage facility, has unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this extremely difficult time,” the company, which is part of the Guardsman Group, said.
“Two of the injured individuals have now been airlifted via air ambulance to the United States to receive specialised burn treatment and critical care. Another injured individual continues to receive medical treatment and support locally,” said the statement.
It added that, “The wellbeing, care, and recovery of those affected remain the absolute priority of Beryllium Limited and the wider Guardsman Group”.
Reports from the Jamaica Fire Brigade are that welding was taking place on one of the company’s armoured trucks before the explosion occurred
