Fredrick Ellis shifts focus to mentorship, artiste development
After years of managing high-pressure, international tours for top reggae and dancehall acts, tour manager Fredrick Ellis is turning his attention to mentorship and artiste development, with a mission to help guide the next generation of talent.
“Talent alone isn’t enough,” Ellis said. “Young artistes need guidance, structure, and someone to help them understand the business.”
Raised in Seaview Gardens, Ellis’s journey into the music industry began far from the spotlight. His first major break came while working in construction and assisting with the building of a studio for veteran producer Donovan Germain, where he was exposed to the business side of music.
Ellis later went on to work alongside major acts, including Buju Banton and Dexta Daps, gaining valuable experience managing large-scale international tours.
Working with Buju Banton, Ellis said, sharpened his professionalism and attention to detail.
“At that level, everything has to be precise,” he explained. “You’re dealing with big audiences, tight schedules, and high expectations.”
His responsibilities included coordinating travel, accommodation, security, sound checks, and show execution under intense pressure.
Ellis is now putting systems and partnerships in place to grow out Akeelah Music Innovation, an agency specialising in artiste development and media training. The agency will focus on preparing emerging artistes for both the business and public facing sides of the industry.
“Success is about growth, stability, and respect,” he added. “If I can help someone avoid mistakes and build something lasting, that means everything.”
For his next phase, Ellis is committed to strengthening Jamaica’s music industry from the ground up.
