Don Kwesi continues fine form with Harlequin Cup success
Don Kwesi is quickly becoming one of Caymanas Park’s most exciting prospects. The four-year-old bay colt stamped his class on Saturday, capturing the second running of the $1.4-million Harlequin Cup over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m) for his third-straight win.
Making his first start at the Open Allowance level, the Barrington Bernard trainee passed the test in emphatic fashion.
Content to sit off a sharp early pace set by California Crown with Robert Halledeen and Desert of Malibu with Dane Dawkins, Don Kwesi, ridden by Demar Williams, began to close on rivals approaching the distance.
With a devastating turn of foot, he swept past the leaders inside the final furlong and drew off to win by 1¾ lengths. California Crown held second, with Zulu Warrior ridden by Tyrese Anderson rounding out the top three.
Clocking 1:06.0 (22.4 x 46.2 x 59.2), Don Kwesi signaled he belongs among the track’s top sprinters.
Trainers Peter-John Parsard and Anthony Nunes and jockeys Raddesh Roman and Dane Dawkins won two races each on the day.
Parsard took the first two races with City of Dreams, with Roman aboard, and Army Tank, ridden by Dawkins.
Nunes was successful with Bromtpon Boy (Eric Haughton) in the seventh race and Dark Authority (Tajay Suckoo) in the eighth contest.
In addition to City of Dreams, Roman won the 10th and final race with the Philip Feanny-trained Unbelievable Force, while Dawkins won aboard Family Feud in the third race for trainer Winston Morris.
Racing is to continue next weekend with action on Saturday and Sunday.
