‘There’s still work to do’
Clayton targets improvement after securing Diamond League win in Rabat
World Athletics Championships silver medallist Tina Clayton described her first Wanda Diamond League win as “a solid performance”, but said she was still working on her race after leading a Jamaican clean sweep of the medals in the women’s 100m at Sunday’s Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athletisme de Rabat in Morocco. The meet, which took place inside Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was the third stop on the Wanda Diamond League series.
Clayton, who got off to a fast start and dictated the pace, ran a season’s best 10.85 seconds (0.3m/s), finishing just off the meeting record 10.83 seconds set by Elaine Thompson-Herah in 2022 and said she was pleased with her execution over the course.
“I am happy with the result, especially because I managed to get a season best, which shows I am moving in the right direction. However, I still need to fix few things,” Clayton said.
Clayton, who improved on her previous season’s best 10.98 seconds said she was cognisant of the depth of the field she was up against and knew she had to dig deep for a win.
“The biggest challenge I faced is the level of competition, especially when you line up against strong athletes, everyone is there to win, so you really have to be at your best.”
Lavanya Williams was second in a personal best 10.95 seconds, just under her previous 10.96 seconds mark set earlier this year, and Jonielle Smith took third in 11.00 seconds, both making their Diamond League debuts.
The only other Jamaican who had a podium finish was double World Championships bronze medallist Rushell Clayton, who was third in the women’s 400m hurdles in 53.75 seconds — the third best in the world, while Andrenette Knight was eighth in 55.37 seconds.
Emma Zapletalova set a Slovakian national record 52.82 seconds and the world lead to win, with American Anna Cockrell second with 53.18 seconds.
World Championships finalist Lamara Distin finished joint fourth in the Women’s high jump with a best of 1.91m, while Kerrica Hill was ninth in the 100m hurdles, running a season’s best 12.71 seconds (1.2m/s) in what was also her Diamond League debut.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan won with 12.28 seconds to break her own meet record 12.45 seconds.
After his national record 22.34m last week in China, Rajindra Campbell was seventh in the men’s shot put with 21.04m as American Joe Kovacs won with a world leading and meet record 22.58m.
Bryan Levell faded to ninth place in the men’s 200m, running 20.44 seconds (0.4m/s).
