ITA reporting 49 fewer road deaths this year
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) is reporting that 49 fewer people have been killed in road fatalities up to June 5 this year, when compared with the similar period in 2025.
This is a big 30 per cent decline in road deaths from 103 fatal crashes. If the current 30 per cent decrease is maintained throughout the year, Jamaica would see road fatalities falling below the 300-mark for the first time since 2012 when 260 people were killed.
Of note is that fatal crashes this year are also down 30 per cent according to the latest daily crash statistics released by the ITA.
According to the statistics, motorcyclists account for 30 or 26 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year. At the same time, pedestrians account for 28 or 25 per cent of fatalities; private motor vehicle drivers account for 24 or 21 per cent; private motor vehicle passengers account for 20 or 18 per cent; and pedalcyclists account for five or four per cent.
Vulnerable road users – pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers combined – account for 57 per cent of all fatalities since the start of the year.
Meanwhile, males and females account for 83 per cent and 17 per cent respectively of fatalities so far this year.
