National Gallery, Scotia collaborate on new exhibition

KINGSTON. Jamaica — In partnership with Scotiabank Jamaica, the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ) has announced the opening of a new exhibition, Of Wood and Water: The Scotiabank Collection, to take place next Sunday, June 14.

The event is set for 12 Ocean Boulevard in downtown Kingston at 1:30pm and will feature over 40 works from the Scotiabank corporate art collection, and complemented by works from the NGJ’s permanent collection.

Of Wood and Water takes its title from the indigenous Taino name for Jamaica, often translated as “land of wood and water”.

National Gallery says from this ancestral naming, the curated selection of work reflects the island as a place shaped by time and restless forces.

Visitors are invited to consider the dynamic nature of the land and the relations of the people that inhabit it. Guided by geological concepts, these relationships are explored in three chapters: superposition, metamorphism and rupture, the National Gallery said.

Members of the public are invited to attend. Admission is free.
