‘Warrior Chief’ Nelson reaches 500-win milestone in Canada
Jamaican jockey Dane “Warrior Chief” Nelson closed another chapter in his storied career on Saturday, June 6, 2026, reaching 500 winners in Canada with a fitting stakes victory at Century Mile racetrack in Edmonton.
Nelson piloted the Gonzalo Anderson-trained Playful to a victory in the CAN$50,000 Chariot Chaser Stakes, scoring by a length over the six-furlong trip to bring up the landmark.

“It is a very wonderful feeling winning 500 races. Just have to give God thanks for health and strength,” Nelson said after the race.
“Thanks to all the owners, trainers, fellow jockeys, grooms, and everyone who has been supporting throughout the years,” he added.
The veteran reinsman was quick to credit his family for his continued success abroad.
“Also, big up to my biggest supporter, my wife Christina Nelson, who has always been my rock,” he said.

Nelson’s Canadian career has been defined by consistency and professionalism. Since relocating, he has captured three jockey’s titles and become a respected senior rider in the Alberta colony.
“Success only comes with hard work and I will continue to do the necessary hard work to achieve more success,” Nelson said.
Playful stopped the clock in 1:11.2, finishing clear of What a Force, with Jose Asencio up, and Daou, ridden by Richard Balgobin, who completed the trifecta.

Nelson’s stats in Canada now read: 2,564 mounts, 500 wins, 448 seconds, and 408 thirds, with earnings of CAN$5,989,057 in stakes. That’s on top of a decorated Jamaica career where he booted home over 1,200 winners and claimed four champion jockey crowns at Caymanas Park.
Nelson’s impressive start to the season has seen him secure 13 wins, placing him first in the jockey’s championship standings. He is two wins ahead of Jose Mariano Asencio on 11 winners with Brian Boodramsingh third on nine winners.
The racemeet which started on May 2 will end on September 12.
