1-y-o shot and killed by police in Mississippi shoplifting call
MISSISSIPPI, United States — Protests were carried out by Mississippi residents on Tuesday following the shooting death of one-year-old Kohen Wiley in a Walmart parking lot on June 14.
United States (US) media reports indicate that the baby died after a Senatobia cop, responding to a shoplifting call, fired into a moving car, killing him and injuring his aunt, who was driving the vehicle.
Reports are that officers had been responding to a call alleging that someone had tried to steal a box of diapers.
Media reports citing police communication indicated that the car was driving toward the officer when he fired however, some witnesses disputed the account.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave, authorities say, but he has not been publicly identified.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell has indicated the shooting is being investigated, and while the family denies allegations of shoplifting, Tindell says that will be for police to determine.
