Garvey Maceo win rural under-14 cricket title
Garvey Maceo High won the rural Under-14 cricket title on Saturday, easily beating Tacky High by nine wickets at Chedwin Park in St Catherine.
Tacky High batted first and were bundled out for a paltry 24 runs in 20.5 overs. Nickoli Mighty, batting at number eight, top scored with five runs from 31 balls. Garvey Maceo’s captain Andino Edwards captured 7-10 and Najai Wright took 3-10.
In reply, Garvey Maceo easily reached their target, making 26-1 from 11 overs with Jeremiah Johnson top scoring with 15 not out. Dominic Gayle took the lone wicket for Tacky High and finished with 1-4 from two overs.
Daniel Wolliston of Tacky High was the competition’s top batsman hitting 301 runs from seven innings at an average of 60.20. In fact, Tacky had the top five batsmen in Draven Walker (240), Akeem Palmer (205), Dominic Gayle (172) and Leonardo Silvera (163). The next best was Andino Edwards of Garvey Maceo with 121 runs from five innings.
Andino Edwards of Garvey Maceo was the top bowler with 18 wickets, ahead of his teammate Najai Wright with 16 wickets. Edwards was the Most Valuable Player.
“I think we would have got more challenge because all season we were hearing about Tacky, but we are grateful for the win and grateful for the performance,” said Edwards.
Garvey Maceo, which also won the rural Under-16 crown, should face urban champions Kingston College in both the Under-14 and Under-16 all-island finals at a date to be announced.
