Maré by José Avillez: Where Portugal’s Atlantic Heritage Meets Culinary Excellence

Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judge Oneal Johnson reviews Maré by José Avillez, Portugal

Some meals satisfy your appetite. Others stay with you long after the last bite. My lunch at Maré by José Avillez in Cascais firmly belongs in the latter category.

During a recent trip to Portugal, I was excited to explore the beautiful coastal town of Cascais. What I anticipated would be an enjoyable seaside lunch quickly transformed into one of the most memorable culinary experiences of our travels.

Nestled along Portugal’s stunning Atlantic coastline, Maré offers far more than exceptional food; it delivers a complete sensory experience. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated. The afternoon sun shimmered across the ocean, the rhythmic sound of the waves provided a soothing soundtrack, and the panoramic coastal views created a breathtaking backdrop for what would become an unforgettable meal.

For those unfamiliar with Cascais, it is a destination rich in history and charm. Once a humble fishing village, it later became the summer retreat of Portuguese royalty and remains one of Portugal’s most picturesque coastal gems. Its deep connection to the sea is evident everywhere, and nowhere more so than at Maré.

As a Jamaican, I have high standards when it comes to seafood. Growing up on an island blessed with some of the finest seafood in the Caribbean means I approach seafood restaurants with both enthusiasm and scrutiny. Freshness, quality, and execution matter. Maré accomplished exactly that.

Our culinary journey began with Tiger Prawns that were simply outstanding. Sweet, succulent, and perfectly prepared, they showcased the freshness and quality that would define the entire meal. Each bite delivered a beautiful balance of natural flavour and expert technique.

Accompanying the seafood were an array of dishes that deserved recognition in their own right. Fragrant Garlic Rice, perfectly crisp Shoestring Potatoes, rich Shrimp Rice, comforting Smashed Potatoes, and vibrant Seasonal Vegetables all arrived prepared with remarkable attention to detail. Each dish played its role without competing for attention, allowing the seafood to remain the undeniable star of the show.

Then came the star of the afternoon. The Charcoal-Grilled Sea Bass with Olive Oil. This was seafood at its finest. Perfectly grilled with a delicate smoky char, the fish flaked effortlessly and showcased the incredible quality of Portugal’s Atlantic waters. The olive oil enhanced the natural sweetness of the sea bass without masking its character. This was culinary confidence at its finest, allowing extraordinary ingredients to speak for themselves. Every bite reminded me that truly exceptional cooking isn’t about complexity. It’s about understanding ingredients, respecting them, and knowing precisely when to step back and let nature do the talking.

No great meal is complete without dessert, and Maré certainly delivered. The signature Maré Chocolate Cake was rich, indulgent, and deeply satisfying without feeling heavy. Alongside it, the Passion Fruit Dessert brought brightness, freshness, and a vibrant tropical character that provided the perfect contrast. Together, they delivered a flawless ending to an exceptional meal.

What impressed me most was the authenticity that ran through every aspect of the experience. While each dish was beautifully presented, there was no unnecessary theatrics or overcomplication. The focus remained exactly where it should be, on outstanding ingredients, expert execution, and unforgettable flavour.

The service deserves equal praise. Warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional, the team enhanced the experience without ever becoming intrusive. Hospitality at this level cannot be manufactured; it reflects a genuine commitment to excellence.

Maré perfectly captures Portugal’s enduring relationship with the sea. Every dish felt connected to the country’s maritime heritage while showcasing a modern level of culinary refinement. It is the kind of restaurant that leaves a lasting impression, not because it tries to impress, but because it succeeds so naturally.

For anyone visiting Portugal, I highly recommend making the journey from Lisbon to Cascais and securing a table at Maré. The combination of spectacular ocean views, exceptional seafood, refined service, and a breathtaking setting creates an experience that is truly special.

Some restaurants serve food. The truly exceptional ones create lasting memories. Maré does both beautifully.

Rating: 10/10 — A Michelin-recognised dining experience that showcases the very best of Portugal’s Atlantic seafood tradition. Outstanding execution, exceptional ingredients, impeccable service, and a setting that is simply unforgettable.
